Overview

What is turnkey manufacturing?

Turnkey manufacturing means one supplier takes your design and hands back a finished, tested product. Instead of managing a fabricator, a machine shop, a board house and an assembler, you deal with one company, one quality system and one purchase order.

Star Precision has run turnkey programs from Northwest Houston since 1992, for small businesses through Fortune 500 OEMs. Cutting, forming, welding, machining, board population, wiring, assembly and test all happen inside our own two facilities, which is what removes the handoffs, shipping delays and finger-pointing that slow multi-vendor projects down.

The practical result is tighter quality control, faster turnaround, lower total cost and one accountable team from first article through full production.

What our turnkey service covers

A turnkey build draws on every discipline we run in-house. Most projects use several of the following, connected under one schedule.

Metal fabrication

Laser cutting, tube laser, forming on press brakes, rolling, certified welding and finishing in steel, stainless, aluminum and copper. This is where enclosures, chassis, brackets and structural parts come from. See metal fabrication →

CNC machining

Close-tolerance 5-axis milling, multi-axis turning and Wire EDM for the precision components a fabricated structure cannot produce, verified on automated CMM equipment. See CNC machining →

Electronics manufacturing

PCB assembly in an ESD-safe department to IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001, plus cable and wire harness assembly to IPC/WHMA-A-620. Boards and harnesses are built and tested in the same buildings as the metalwork they go into. See electronics manufacturing →

Electro-mechanical assembly

Enclosure, machined parts, boards and harnesses come together into a complete unit: mechanical build, wiring, hardware installation, labelling and functional test. See electro-mechanical assembly →

Manufacturing support and DFM

Design-for-manufacturability review and CAD collaboration before anything is cut. This is usually where the most cost and risk come out of a turnkey build. See manufacturing support →

Materials and components we work with

A finished product rarely uses one material. Turnkey builds here typically combine several of the following, chosen during DFM review for cost and function, not habit.

  • Mild & carbon steelStrong, weldable and economical, used for frames, chassis and structural enclosures.
  • Stainless steelCorrosion resistant and cleanable, for food equipment, outdoor housings and wash-down environments.
  • AluminumLight but rigid, used where weight matters or where parts need to be machined to close tolerance.
  • Copper & brassUsed where conductivity matters, including bus work and electrical hardware.
  • Boards, harnesses & hardwarePopulated PCBs, custom cable and wire harnesses, fasteners, seals, displays and purchased components integrated into the final build.

Quality, inspection and testing

A turnkey product is only worth what it does after it leaves the dock, so verification happens at every stage rather than only at the end. Parts are inspected as they are made, boards are tested as they are populated, and the assembled product is functionally tested before it is packed.

Our turnkey manufacturing process

Every turnkey program follows the same route from idea to shipped product, quoted and managed as one build instead of a chain of separate vendor orders.

  1. Idea, drawing or CADSend a concept, a sketch, a sample or full CAD. We review the whole build for manufacturability and quote it as one package rather than operation by operation.
  2. Cut, form and weldSheet and tube are laser cut, formed on press brakes and welded by certified welders into the enclosure or structure.
  3. Machine the precision partsClose-tolerance components are milled and turned, with CMM inspection to confirm the critical dimensions before they reach assembly.
  4. Populate boards and build harnessesPCBs are assembled and tested in our ESD-safe department, and custom cable and wire harnesses are built to print.
  5. Assemble and integrateEnclosure, machined parts, boards and harnesses come together into a complete electro-mechanical unit, with hardware, labelling and finishing applied.
  6. Test, package and shipThe finished unit is functionally tested, packaged and shipped, or held to a release schedule against your forecast.

From prototype to full production

Because the whole build lives in one place, moving from a proven prototype to production does not mean re-sourcing the work. The same people, programs, fixtures and quality records carry forward, so the second unit is built the way the first one was approved.

That matters most on programs where the design is still moving. A change to an enclosure, a machined feature and a harness can be absorbed together in one revision instead of being negotiated across three suppliers.

Finishing and stocking

Turnkey covers the work after the product is built, not only the build itself.

  • FinishingDeburring, powder coat and plating coordinated as part of the build, so the finish is handled before assembly rather than after.
  • Labelling and serialisationParts and finished units labelled so they are easy to identify, track and reorder.
  • Inventory and stockingFinished goods held in stock so you order and pull on demand instead of waiting for a fresh run.
  • Packaging and deliveryUnits packed, palletised and shipped, or released against a schedule you set.

Industries we build turnkey products for

Turnkey programs run across most of the sectors we serve from our Texas facilities, especially the regulated and heavy-industrial ones below, where one accountable vendor matters as much as the finished product:

  • Oil, gas and energyControl panels, enclosures and field hardware, cut, machined, wired and tested under one roof.
  • Medical and scientificInstrument frames and complete lab devices, assembled, calibrated and tested.
  • Traffic and infrastructureSolar-powered beacons and signage assemblies, programmed and tested before shipping.
  • Food equipmentStainless machines and frames built, finished and supplied ready to install.
  • Industrial and OEMMachine frames and sub-assemblies delivered as complete units against a production forecast.

What to expect when you work with us

Working with a turnkey supplier should be simple. From the first drawing or idea you send to the finished product arriving ready to sell, here is what you can count on from our team.

  • One point of contactA single team owns the build end to end, so there is no vendor-to-vendor coordination left with you.
  • A quote for the whole buildYou get one price for the finished product, not separate quotes to assemble yourself.
  • Honest DFM feedbackIf a design will be expensive or difficult to build, we say so before it is cut, not after.
  • One quality systemThe same ISO 9001 system covers fabrication, machining, electronics and assembly.
  • Fast to iterateTwo connected Texas facilities keep first-article reviews and design changes moving fast, whether you are down the road or shipping in from across the country.

Turnkey manufacturing FAQs

Quick answers about our turnkey service. Company-wide questions are covered in the FAQs at the bottom of the page.

What does turnkey manufacturing mean?

It means you hand off a drawing or an idea and receive a complete, tested product. Fabrication, machining, electronics, assembly, test and packaging all happen here, so there is nothing left for you to coordinate between vendors.

What capabilities do you combine?

Metal fabrication, CNC machining, electronics manufacturing and electro-mechanical assembly, plus manufacturing support and DFM, all in our two Northwest Houston facilities.

Can you start from just an idea or drawing?

Yes. Bring a concept, a sketch or full CAD. Our manufacturing support team reviews it for manufacturability and helps refine it before production, which is usually where the most cost comes out of a build.

Do you test and package the final product?

Yes. We functionally test the finished product, then label, package and ship it ready for your customer, so it arrives as a product ready to sell rather than a box of parts.

What is an example of a turnkey project?

The Fraction Collector lab instrument used every service we offer, from fabrication and machining through PCB assembly, cable harness, final assembly, calibration and test. The utility relay panel and the solar signage beacon are two more complete builds.

Do you handle both prototypes and production?

Yes. We build first articles and single units, then scale the same build to repeat production runs against your forecast, without moving the work to a different supplier.

What file formats do you accept?

STEP, IGES, DXF/DWG and PDF drawings, plus Gerber and bills of material for the electronics side. If you only have a sample part or a sketch, send that instead and we will work from it.

Who is my point of contact?

One team owns the whole build. You get a single point of contact from first article through production, instead of chasing a fabricator, a machine shop and a board house separately.

Do you hold inventory or run a stocking program?

Yes. We can label and inventory finished goods or sub-assemblies so you order and pull against stock instead of waiting on a new production run each time.

What quality approvals do you hold?

An ISO 9001 quality system, IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 for electronics, IPC/WHMA-A-620 for cable and wire harness, plus certified welding processes and CMM dimensional inspection.

Where are you located?

Northwest Houston, Texas. Metal fabrication runs at 5410 Brystone Drive and machining, electronics and assembly at 11236 Brittmoore Park Drive, both in Houston, TX 77041.

Do you only serve customers in the Houston area?

No. We build from our Northwest Houston facilities and ship finished products nationwide. Local customers get the fastest turnaround, but distance is never a barrier.
