Overview

System integration, done in-house

Electro-mechanical assembly, also called box build, is where separate parts become one product. We take your electronic components, wiring and mechanical hardware and integrate them into a complete, working system.

What makes Star Precision different is that we also fabricate the enclosure and populate the boards. So instead of shipping metal to one vendor and boards to another, you get the enclosure, the PCBA and the wire harness assembled, tested and troubleshot by a single team. Our department is ESD-safe with IPC certified inspectors on the floor.

Box build capabilities

Everything needed to turn components into a finished, tested system, broken down into the three things a box build actually requires.

System integration

Custom box builds combine electronic components, boards and mechanical hardware into a full working system, assembled by the same team that fabricated the enclosure and populated the boards, so nothing is guessed at across a handoff.

Wiring and harness integration

Cable and wire harnesses are routed, dressed and connected inside the build to link boards and hardware, built to IPC/WHMA-A-620 by the same department that will install them, not shipped in from an outside harness house.

Testing and troubleshooting

Comprehensive product testing verifies the finished system against your requirements, and any fault found is diagnosed and fixed on the same floor where the unit was built, not returned for a separate repair cycle.

Enclosure, boards and harness as one

Because fabrication, machining and electronics share our two Houston facilities, we build the whole product, not just one layer of it, for customers nationwide.

  • Fabricated enclosureLaser cut, formed and welded metal built in-house.
  • Populated boardsPCBA from our ESD-safe electronics department.
  • Cable and wire harnessCustom harnesses routed and connected in the build.
  • Full functional testThe complete unit is verified before it ships.

Our box build process

Every job follows the same controlled path, from design review to final functional test, so the finished system arrives complete, tested and ready to use whether you order one unit or a full production run.

  1. Design and DFM reviewWe review your product, drawings and bill of materials, flag anything that would slow the build, and quote the complete system as one package.
  2. Fabricate the enclosureSheet metal and machined parts for the enclosure are laser cut, formed, welded and machined in-house, by the same team that will assemble the final unit.
  3. Populate the boardsOur ESD-safe electronics department populates and tests the PCBAs for the system on the same MES-tracked line used for any standalone board order.
  4. Build the wiringCable and wire harnesses are cut, crimped, soldered and tested to IPC/WHMA-A-620, ready for integration.
  5. Integrate and assembleBoards, harnesses and hardware are assembled into the enclosure as one unit, with labeling and serialization applied as needed.
  6. Test, troubleshoot and shipThe finished system is functionally tested against your requirements, any issues resolved on the same floor where it was built, then packaged and shipped.

What to expect when you work with us

Working with a box build partner should be straightforward. From the first file you send to the finished system arriving on your dock, here is what you can count on from our team.

  • Send drawings and a BOMSend drawings, a bill of materials and CAD data for the enclosure and boards, and we will scope the whole build.
  • Fast, honest quotesYou get one quote for the complete integration, not separate figures to assemble yourself.
  • One point of contactOne team owns your job from fabrication through electronics and final test, all under one roof.
  • NDAs on requestWe sign NDAs on request, so your system design stays fully confidential.
  • On-time deliveryYou get dependable, on-time delivery from our Texas shop, not an overseas queue.

Electro-Mechanical Assembly FAQs

Quick answers about our box build services. Company-wide questions are covered in the FAQs at the bottom of the page.

What is electro-mechanical assembly or box build?

It is the integration of electronic components, boards, wiring and mechanical hardware into a complete, working system, also known as a box build.

Do you fabricate the enclosure too?

Yes. We fabricate the metal enclosure in-house and combine it with the populated boards and wire harness, so the whole product comes from one supplier.

Do you test the finished system?

Yes. We provide comprehensive product testing and troubleshooting so the complete unit is verified to work before it leaves the floor.

Are you certified for this work?

Our department is ESD-safe with IPC certified inspectors, and harnesses are built to IPC/WHMA-A-620 and J-STD-001.

Can you integrate our wiring and harnesses?

Yes. We build and integrate custom cable and wire harnesses inside the box build to connect the boards and hardware.

Can you help design the enclosure, not just build it?

Yes. Our manufacturing support team reviews the enclosure and system design for manufacturability before anything is cut, so problems get caught before production, not after.

Do you handle low-volume box builds, or only large runs?

Both. We build single first-article systems through large-scale production, using the same team and process either way.

What happens if a fault is found during testing?

It is diagnosed and repaired on the same floor where the unit was built, by the team that assembled it, instead of being shipped out for a separate repair cycle.

Do you only serve customers in the Houston area?

No. We integrate systems from our Northwest Houston facility and ship finished systems nationwide. Local customers get the fastest turnaround, but distance is never a barrier.

Company FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What does Star Precision manufacture?

We are a turnkey contract manufacturer. That means metal fabrication and tube laser cutting, precision CNC machining and Wire EDM, and full electronics manufacturing (PCB assembly, electro-mechanical box build, and cable and wire harness assembly), plus design-for-manufacturability and manufacturing support, all in-house since 1992.

What makes Star Precision a one-stop shop?

Because fabrication, machining and electronics assembly all happen under one roof, we can take a project from raw material and bare board through to a finished, tested and packaged product without handing it off between outside vendors. You get one supplier, one point of contact and one team accountable for the whole build.

Where are you located?

Northwest Houston, Texas, in two facilities. Our Brystone Drive plant (5410 Brystone Drive) houses metal fabrication, and Brittmoore Park Drive (11236 Brittmoore Park Drive) runs machining, electronics and assembly. Both are in Houston, TX 77041.

Are you ISO certified?

Yes. Star Precision is ISO 9001 certified. Our electronics processes are IPC-A-610, IPC/WHMA-A-620 and J-STD-001 certified, with an ESD-safe department, and we use CMM and laser quality inspection for dimensional accuracy.

What materials do you work with?

For fabrication and machining we work in mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and brass, plus a wide range of electronic components for PCB and electro-mechanical assembly. If you are unsure what suits your part, our team can advise during a design review.

What are your fabrication and machining capabilities?

Sheet metal laser cutting up to 60 x 120 in and up to 1.00 in steel, NC punching and forming on a 220-ton, 14 ft brake, and fiber tube laser cutting of tube up to 30 ft raw and parts up to 236 in. On the machining side we run 5-axis milling, multi-axis turning and Wire EDM, verified by automated CMM inspection.

What electronics assembly do you offer?

SMT, through-hole and mixed-technology PCB assembly, single and double sided, managed by MES software and verified with SPI, AOI, X-ray and functional testing, with conformal coating and potting available. We also build cable and wire harness assemblies and integrate everything into complete electro-mechanical box builds.

Do you handle both prototypes and production?

Yes. We support the full lifecycle, from design-for-manufacturability and prototypes through first article inspection to low and high volume production, so the same partner that helps refine your design can also scale it.

Which industries do you serve?

We build for oil, gas and energy, aerospace and space, defense and military, medical and scientific instruments, electronics, data and telecom, industrial and OEM equipment, architectural metals, food equipment, solar and alternative energy, robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, security and surveillance, agriculture, HVAC and building automation, retail and point of sale, and marine, among others.
