Overview

Support at every phase

Manufacturing support means we are involved before the first chip is cut. We help at every phase, from concept to prototype to production, to reach the lowest cost design without giving up accuracy.

Bring us a design that is still evolving and our engineers review it for manufacturability, suggest changes that use less material and fewer steps, and generate CNC programs directly from your engineering data. That reduces setup errors, speeds up the first article and lowers the cost of every part that follows. The earlier you involve us, the more we can save.

Cost reduction plus improved quality equals DFM

Four ways manufacturing support lowers your cost and raises your quality, before or after the first part is cut.

Design for Manufacturability

We simplify designs so they use less material and fewer steps, saving time and money without losing function. This is the review that finds cost before it gets locked into the part.

CAD collaboration

We design and collaborate in SolidWorks and program CNC toolpaths in GibbsCAM, generated directly from your engineering data instead of being reinterpreted by hand, which means fewer transcription errors and faster setups on the machine floor.

Prototype to production

The same team that proves your prototype carries the design into repeatable, full production, so nothing gets lost or re-learned when the order size changes.

Reverse engineering

No drawing? We can reverse engineer from an existing part and produce CAD models and drawings.

Manufacturing support specifications

What manufacturing support covers, from first sketch to full production, using SolidWorks and GibbsCAM to move your design into a real part. Bring us a design that is still evolving and we will tell you exactly where the cost is coming from.

Lower cost, higher quality

Small design changes early in the process compound into real savings across the whole production run, which is why the earlier you involve us, the more there is to save.

Industries we support

Design-for-manufacturability review benefits any complex part, but these regulated and heavy-industrial sectors lean on it most, where a design mistake caught early is far cheaper than one caught after tooling:

  • Industrial & OEMDFM review helps OEM equipment makers hit cost targets without giving up function.
  • Aerospace & spaceComplex, close-tolerance aerospace parts benefit from an early manufacturability review.
  • Medical & scientificPrecision instrument and device designs are refined before committing to tooling.
  • Defense & militaryRuggedized, tightly controlled designs are reviewed for manufacturability before production.

What to expect when you work with us

Working with a manufacturing partner should be straightforward. From the first sketch you send to the finished parts arriving on your dock, here is what you can count on from our team.

  • Bring us an early ideaA STEP, IGES, DXF/DWG or PDF file works, or bring a rough sketch and we will help you develop it into a manufacturable design.
  • Honest, specific feedbackWe tell you exactly which features and choices are driving cost, not just that a design "looks expensive."
  • One point of contactOne team owns your job from design review through production, all under one roof.
  • NDAs on requestWe sign NDAs on request, so early-stage ideas stay fully confidential.
  • On-time deliveryYou get dependable, on-time delivery from our Texas shop, not an overseas queue.

Manufacturing Support FAQs

Quick answers about our DFM and engineering support. Company-wide questions are covered in the FAQs at the bottom of the page.

What is manufacturing support?

It is engineering help across every phase of your product, from concept to prototype to production, aimed at the lowest cost design without losing accuracy.

What is Design for Manufacturability (DFM)?

DFM means reviewing and simplifying a design so it is easier and cheaper to build, using less material and fewer steps while improving quality.

How does DFM save money?

By simplifying designs, using less material and reducing setup errors, DFM lowers the cost of the first article and every part that follows.

Do you use our CAD data?

Yes. We collaborate in CAD and generate CNC programs directly from your engineering data, which reduces errors and speeds up setup.

What CAD/CAM software do you use?

We design and collaborate in SolidWorks and program CNC toolpaths in GibbsCAM, so your engineering data moves into production without being retyped or reinterpreted by hand.

Can you help from concept to production?

Yes. We support the full journey, from an early concept through prototype and into repeatable full production.

Can you reverse engineer a part with no drawing?

Yes. We can recreate a design from an existing part, the way we rebuilt Panelmatic's relay panel from the original unit with no starting drawing at all.

Do you sign NDAs for an early-stage concept?

Yes. We sign NDAs on request, so an idea that is still just a sketch stays fully confidential.

Does DFM review add time to my schedule?

No. Review happens alongside quoting, not as a separate delay, so you get manufacturability feedback and a quote at the same time.

Do you only work with local Houston companies?

No. Our engineering team works out of Northwest Houston, but we support DFM and CAD collaboration for customers nationwide, whether the finished parts ship next door or across the country.

How do I get started with manufacturing support?

Use the Request a Quote page to share your concept or drawings, or call (713) 983-8883 and we will review your design.

Company FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What does Star Precision manufacture?

We are a turnkey contract manufacturer. That means metal fabrication and tube laser cutting, precision CNC machining and Wire EDM, and full electronics manufacturing (PCB assembly, electro-mechanical box build, and cable and wire harness assembly), plus design-for-manufacturability and manufacturing support, all in-house since 1992.

What makes Star Precision a one-stop shop?

Because fabrication, machining and electronics assembly all happen under one roof, we can take a project from raw material and bare board through to a finished, tested and packaged product without handing it off between outside vendors. You get one supplier, one point of contact and one team accountable for the whole build.

Where are you located?

Northwest Houston, Texas, in two facilities. Our Brystone Drive plant (5410 Brystone Drive) houses metal fabrication, and Brittmoore Park Drive (11236 Brittmoore Park Drive) runs machining, electronics and assembly. Both are in Houston, TX 77041.

Are you ISO certified?

Yes. Star Precision is ISO 9001 certified. Our electronics processes are IPC-A-610, IPC/WHMA-A-620 and J-STD-001 certified, with an ESD-safe department, and we use CMM and laser quality inspection for dimensional accuracy.

What materials do you work with?

For fabrication and machining we work in mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and brass, plus a wide range of electronic components for PCB and electro-mechanical assembly. If you are unsure what suits your part, our team can advise during a design review.

What are your fabrication and machining capabilities?

Sheet metal laser cutting up to 60 x 120 in and up to 1.00 in steel, NC punching and forming on a 220-ton, 14 ft brake, and fiber tube laser cutting of tube up to 30 ft raw and parts up to 236 in. On the machining side we run 5-axis milling, multi-axis turning and Wire EDM, verified by automated CMM inspection.

What electronics assembly do you offer?

SMT, through-hole and mixed-technology PCB assembly, single and double sided, managed by MES software and verified with SPI, AOI, X-ray and functional testing, with conformal coating and potting available. We also build cable and wire harness assemblies and integrate everything into complete electro-mechanical box builds.

Do you handle both prototypes and production?

Yes. We support the full lifecycle, from design-for-manufacturability and prototypes through first article inspection to low and high volume production, so the same partner that helps refine your design can also scale it.

Which industries do you serve?

We build for oil, gas and energy, aerospace and space, defense and military, medical and scientific instruments, electronics, data and telecom, industrial and OEM equipment, architectural metals, food equipment, solar and alternative energy, robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, security and surveillance, agriculture, HVAC and building automation, retail and point of sale, and marine, among others.
