Machining

CNC machining, milling, turning & Wire EDM FAQs

Tolerances, materials and multi-axis machining questions across our machine shop.

What CNC machining services do you offer?

3-, 4- and 5-axis CNC milling, multi-axis CNC turning and mill-turn, Wire EDM, and prototype through high-volume production machining, all verified with CMM inspection.

What materials can you machine?

Mild and carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass and engineering plastics for small to medium parts. Have a different material? Send the details and we will confirm whether we can machine it.

What tolerances can you hold?

We hold close, repeatable tolerances part-to-part and verify critical dimensions on a CMM. Share your drawing with its callouts and we will confirm we can meet them before you order.

What is the benefit of multi-axis turning?

Multi-axis mill-turn combines turning and milling on one machine. That lowers setup and cycle time and reduces scrap, keeping close-tolerance round parts accurate and cost-effective.

Do you offer 5-axis machining?

Yes. 5-axis milling lets us reach complex curves, angled faces and undercuts in a single setup, which improves accuracy and surface finish on complex parts.

Can you handle both prototypes and production?

Yes. We machine single first articles, low-volume bridge runs and automated high-volume production using the same programs, so parts scale without re-engineering.

What file formats do you accept?

STEP, IGES, DXF/DWG and PDF drawings all work, and we can start from a physical sample if that is all you have.

How do you verify accuracy and quality?

Automated CMM inspection plus first-article and in-process checks, backed by our ISO 9001 quality system. Inspection reports and material certs are available on request.

Do you offer finishing and assembly too?

Yes. Deburring, tapping, welding, coating and full assembly are handled in-house or coordinated for you, so machined parts ship ready to use.

Where are you located?

Northwest Houston, Texas. We have served Houston-area and national manufacturers as a contract machine shop since 1992.

How do I get a machining quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to upload drawings or CAD files, or call (713) 983-8883. We reply with a fast, no-obligation quote.

What can 5-axis milling do that 3-axis cannot?

5-axis milling moves the tool or part along five axes at once, so it can reach undercuts, contoured surfaces and complex curves that are impossible on a 3-axis machine, often in fewer setups.

What materials do you mill?

We mill a wide range of materials for small to medium parts, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum and copper or brass.

How tight are your tolerances?

We hold close, repeatable tolerances and verify critical features with automated CMM inspection. Send us your drawing and we will confirm we can hold your callouts.

Do you program from our CAD files?

Yes. We generate CNC programs directly from your CAD data using industry-best software, which reduces errors and setup time.

How do I get a milling quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to upload drawings or CAD files, or call (713) 983-8883. We reply with a fast, no-obligation quote.

What is multi-axis turning?

Multi-axis turning, or mill-turn, combines turning and milling on one machine. The part is turned while live tooling adds milled features in the same setup, without moving the part.

How does mill-turn save money?

Doing turning and milling in one setup lowers setup and cycle time and reduces scrap. Fewer setups also mean fewer chances for error, which lowers the cost per part.

What materials do you turn?

We turn a wide range of materials for small to medium parts, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum and copper or brass.

How tight are your turning tolerances?

We hold close, repeatable tolerances and verify diameters and critical features with automated CMM inspection. Send your drawing and we will confirm your callouts.

How do I get a turning quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to upload drawings or CAD files, or call (713) 983-8883. We reply with a fast, no-obligation quote.

What is Wire EDM?

Wire EDM, or wire electrical discharge machining, cuts conductive metal with a thin, electrically charged wire. Small sparks erode the material, so there is no cutting force on the part.

What is Wire EDM best for?

It is ideal for precise, complex profiles, fine detail and sharp inside corners, and for hardened or heat-treated materials that are difficult to machine any other way.

Can Wire EDM cut hardened metal?

Yes. The process erodes material with sparks rather than a cutting tool, so the hardness of the metal does not matter. It cuts hardened and heat-treated parts cleanly.

How accurate is Wire EDM?

Because there is no cutting force, the part does not distort, so accuracy is high. We verify critical features with automated CMM inspection.

Does Wire EDM waste much material?

No. The wire makes a very narrow cut, so it removes very little material and waste stays minimal.

How do I get a Wire EDM quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to upload drawings or CAD files, or call (713) 983-8883. We reply with a fast, no-obligation quote.

Prototype Machining

View full service page
Do you machine one-off prototypes?

Yes. We machine single first articles and low-volume runs, cut on the same production equipment so the part behaves the way the final part will.

What is DFM and how does it help?

Design for Manufacturability means we review your design and suggest changes that use less material and fewer steps. The result is lower cost and improved quality.

Do you program from our CAD files?

Yes. We generate CNC programs directly from your engineering data using advanced CAD, which reduces errors and gets you to a first part faster.

Can you scale my prototype to production?

Yes. When your design is proven, we scale the same CNC programs and quality system into a full production run, so the part does not change when the quantity does.

What materials can you prototype in?

We machine a wide range of materials for small to medium parts, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum and copper or brass.

How do I start a prototype?

Use the Request a Quote page to upload drawings or CAD files, or call (713) 983-8883. We reply with a fast, no-obligation quote.

Electronics

Electronics, PCB, box build & cable harness FAQs

PCB assembly, box build integration and cable and wire harness questions.

Electronics Manufacturing

View full service page
What does electronics manufacturing services (EMS) mean here?

It means we build electronic and electro-mechanical products for you, from simple sub-assemblies to complete product-level builds, including PCB assembly, cable and wire harnesses and box build integration.

Can you build a complete product, not just circuit boards?

Yes. We populate the boards, build the harnesses, fabricate the enclosure and integrate it all into a finished, tested product that is ready to ship.

What certifications do your electronics carry?

Our electronics department works to IPC-A-610 for assemblies, IPC/WHMA-A-620 for cable and harness, and J-STD-001 for soldering, in an ESD-safe environment.

Do you handle prototypes and low volume?

Yes. We support prototyping through low and high volume production, with our lines managed by the latest MES software for traceability.

Can you combine our electronics with fabricated metal enclosures?

That is our core strength. Because fabrication, machining and electronics share the same Houston facilities, we combine populated boards with in-house enclosures into one complete unit.

How do I get an electronics manufacturing quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to upload drawings, gerbers or a bill of materials, or call (713) 983-8883 for a fast, no-obligation quote.

Do you assemble SMT, THT and mixed boards?

Yes. We build surface mount, through hole and mixed technology boards, single and double sided, including selective solder for sensitive or through hole parts.

What inspection and test do you provide?

We use SPI, AOI and AXI/CT X-ray inspection plus functional testing, so both visible and hidden joints are checked and each board is proven to perform.

Can you conformal coat or pot the boards?

Yes. We offer conformal coating and potting to protect boards from moisture, dust and chemicals in harsh operating environments.

Do you handle prototypes and production?

We build from a single prototype to large-scale production, with every job managed by our latest MES software for traceability.

Are your inspectors certified?

Yes. Our inspectors are IPC-A-610 certified and the entire electronics department is ESD-safe.

What is selective solder and when is it used?

It solders individual through-hole joints with precise, targeted heat, so a board that also carries heat-sensitive SMT components does not have to pass through a full wave solder process.

Can you build boards with both SMT and through-hole parts?

Yes. Mixed technology boards are the normal case on our line, not a special request, and we sequence the build so no component is exposed to more heat than it can handle.

How fast is your placement line?

Our Mycronic pick-and-place lines run up to 59,000 components an hour, which keeps larger and repeat runs moving without sacrificing placement accuracy.

What does your MES software actually track?

Materials, process steps and inspection results are tracked from kitting through to the finished board, so every unit has a traceable build record.

How do I get a PCB assembly quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to upload gerbers and a bill of materials, or call (713) 983-8883 for a fast, no-obligation quote.

Electro-Mechanical Assembly

View full service page
What is electro-mechanical assembly or box build?

It is the integration of electronic components, boards, wiring and mechanical hardware into a complete, working system, also known as a box build.

Do you fabricate the enclosure too?

Yes. We fabricate the metal enclosure in-house and combine it with the populated boards and wire harness, so the whole product comes from one supplier.

Do you test the finished system?

Yes. We provide comprehensive product testing and troubleshooting so the complete unit is verified to work before it leaves the floor.

Are you certified for this work?

Our department is ESD-safe with IPC certified inspectors, and harnesses are built to IPC/WHMA-A-620 and J-STD-001.

Can you integrate our wiring and harnesses?

Yes. We build and integrate custom cable and wire harnesses inside the box build to connect the boards and hardware.

Can you help design the enclosure, not just build it?

Yes. Our manufacturing support team reviews the enclosure and system design for manufacturability before anything is cut, so problems get caught before production, not after.

Do you handle low-volume box builds, or only large runs?

Both. We build single first-article systems through large-scale production, using the same team and process either way.

What happens if a fault is found during testing?

It is diagnosed and repaired on the same floor where the unit was built, by the team that assembled it, instead of being shipped out for a separate repair cycle.

How do I get a box build quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to share your drawings and bill of materials, or call (713) 983-8883 for a fast, no-obligation quote.

Do you test the harnesses?

Yes. Every harness goes through continuity and automated testing to confirm each pin and connection is correct.

Can you integrate harnesses with our electronics?

Yes. We integrate harnesses with your boards and box builds, and because we build those too, the harness is tested against the real product.

Do you handle prototypes and production?

We build both prototype runs and full production quantities, using your design or working with you to develop one.

What connector families are you tooled for?

Molex and other standard connector families. Tell us your connector and we will confirm we are tooled for it before you commit to a design.

What is the maximum wire gauge you can crimp?

Up to 10 AWG on our universal crimp press, with a dedicated ferrule crimping press for smaller gauges that need a ferrule terminal.

Can you design a harness, not just build to a print?

Yes. We can design a harness with you from a wiring diagram or a functional description, not only build from a finished print.

How do I get a harness quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to share drawings or a sample, or call (713) 983-8883 for a fast, no-obligation quote.

Support & Turnkey

Manufacturing support & turnkey manufacturing FAQs

Design for manufacturability and complete, one-supplier turnkey build questions.

Manufacturing Support

View full service page
What is manufacturing support?

It is engineering help across every phase of your product, from concept to prototype to production, aimed at the lowest cost design without losing accuracy.

What is Design for Manufacturability (DFM)?

DFM means reviewing and simplifying a design so it is easier and cheaper to build, using less material and fewer steps while improving quality.

How does DFM save money?

By simplifying designs, using less material and reducing setup errors, DFM lowers the cost of the first article and every part that follows.

Do you use our CAD data?

Yes. We collaborate in CAD and generate CNC programs directly from your engineering data, which reduces errors and speeds up setup.

Can you help from concept to production?

Yes. We support the full journey, from an early concept through prototype and into repeatable full production.

Can you reverse engineer a part with no drawing?

Yes. We can recreate a design from an existing part, the way we rebuilt Panelmatic's relay panel from the original unit with no starting drawing at all.

Do you sign NDAs for an early-stage concept?

Yes. We sign NDAs on request, so an idea that is still just a sketch stays fully confidential.

Does DFM review add time to my schedule?

No. Review happens alongside quoting, not as a separate delay, so you get manufacturability feedback and a quote at the same time.

How do I get started with manufacturing support?

Use the Request a Quote page to share your concept or drawings, or call (713) 983-8883 and we will review your design.

Turnkey Manufacturing

View full service page
What does turnkey manufacturing mean?

It means you hand off a drawing or an idea and receive a complete, tested product. Fabrication, machining, electronics, assembly, test and packaging all happen here, so there is nothing left for you to coordinate between vendors.

What capabilities do you combine?

Metal fabrication, CNC machining, electronics manufacturing and electro-mechanical assembly, plus manufacturing support and DFM, all in our two Northwest Houston facilities.

Can you start from just an idea or drawing?

Yes. Bring a concept, a sketch or full CAD. Our manufacturing support team reviews it for manufacturability and helps refine it before production, which is usually where the most cost comes out of a build.

Do you test and package the final product?

Yes. We functionally test the finished product, then label, package and ship it ready for your customer, so it arrives as a product ready to sell rather than a box of parts.

What is an example of a turnkey project?

The Fraction Collector lab instrument used every service we offer, from fabrication and machining through PCB assembly, cable harness, final assembly, calibration and test. The utility relay panel and the solar signage beacon are two more complete builds.

Do you handle both prototypes and production?

Yes. We build first articles and single units, then scale the same build to repeat production runs against your forecast, without moving the work to a different supplier.

What file formats do you accept?

STEP, IGES, DXF/DWG and PDF drawings, plus Gerber and bills of material for the electronics side. If you only have a sample part or a sketch, send that instead and we will work from it.

Who is my point of contact?

One team owns the whole build. You get a single point of contact from first article through production, instead of chasing a fabricator, a machine shop and a board house separately.

Do you hold inventory or run a stocking program?

Yes. We can label and inventory finished goods or sub-assemblies so you order and pull against stock instead of waiting on a new production run each time.

What quality approvals do you hold?

An ISO 9001 quality system, IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 for electronics, IPC/WHMA-A-620 for cable and wire harness, plus certified welding processes and CMM dimensional inspection.

Where are you located?

Northwest Houston, Texas. Metal fabrication runs at 5410 Brystone Drive and machining, electronics and assembly at 11236 Brittmoore Park Drive, both in Houston, TX 77041.

How do I get a turnkey quote?

Use the Request a Quote page to share drawings, CAD or just an idea, or call (713) 983-8883. We reply with a fast, no-obligation quote for the complete build, not just one operation.
